Our Directors

Co-directors Daphna Shohamy and Larry Abbott

The Kavli Institute for Brain Science was established at Columbia University in 2004 with Nobel laureate Eric Kandel as its inaugural director. Rafael Yuste, a professor of Biological Sciences and Neuroscience at Columbia, served as co-director over this period. We became co-directors in 2021 and are excited to carry on the tradition of excellence in research and training that the Institute has come to represent. Our aim is to foster the collaboration of researchers with expertise across scientific disciplines toward a common goal of understanding brain function and treating brain dysfunction.
